Gustavo Santaolalla Information
Gustavo Santaolalla (August 19, 1951) is an Argentine record producer, musician, and composer. He was born in Ciudad Jardin Lomas del Palomar, Argentina. In 1967, Santaolalla co-founded the band Arco Iris, a precursor to the genre of music known as rock nacional because of its fusion of rock and Latin American folk. Ex-model Danais "Dana" Winnycka and her musician companion Ara Tokatlian led the band into a yoga commune lifestyle.
The band achieved some success with songs like "Maanas Campestres" ("Country Mornings") and explored new avenues of musical expression with works like a ballet score for Oscar Aráiz. Since meat, alcohol, and drugs were all forbidden by Dana's teachings, Santaolalla felt stifled and eventually left the group in 1975.
Santaolalla formed the ensemble Soluna in 1976, featuring himself, teenage pianist and singer Alejandro Lerner, and his then-girlfriend Monica Campins. They only made one album together, 1977's Energa Natural. He moved to Los Angeles and joined forces with fellow ex-Crucis member Anbal Kerpel to form the rock band Wet Picnic. Shortly after releasing his debut album, he returned to Argentina to produce Leon Gieco's Pensar en Nada. He has released three albums under his name.
