Girlpool Information
Girlpool was founded in 2013 by Avery Tucker and Harmony Tividad, two of their closest friends. In February 2014, Girlpool published their debut EP on Bandcamp; Wichita Recordings reissued it in the fall of the same year. The EP was met with mostly positive reviews from critics, with an aggregate Metacritic score of 79. This EP was reviewed by Chris Conaton, who drew comparisons to "an angrier, socially conscious Kimya Dawson."
Before the World Was Big, Girlpool's debut album was released on Wichita Recordings on June 2, 2015. Metacritic gave it a score of 79 out of 100, indicating that critics regarded it favorably. Jayson Greene of Pitchfork awarded it a 7.8 and called it "a quiet album of uncommon intensity." Girlpool announced their signing to Anti-Records in March 2017, along with details about their upcoming second studio album and North American tour.
Powerplant, the band's second studio album, was released on May 12, 2017, via Anti-. Pitchfork's Jillian Mapes rated the album an 8.3. "echoing second-wave emo sourness ("Your Heart"), Britpop jangle ("She Goes By"), and classic alt-rock loud-quiet-loudness throughout," as defined by Mapes, best describes their new sounds. Avery Tucker revealed his transgender identity in the summer of 2017.
