Fishbone Information
Fishbone is an American rock band. The current lineup consists of John Steward (drums), Mark Phillips (guitar), Christopher Dowd (vocals, trombone, and keyboards), “Dirty” Walter A. Kibby II (trumpet and vocals), John Norwood Fisher (vocals and bass), and Angelo Moore (percussion, theremin, saxophones, and vocals). The group initially got together in Los Angeles in 1979. They perform a variety of musical genres, including soul, reggae, metal, ska, funk, and punk. Madame Wong’s, a landmark club in Los Angeles’s Chinatown that had featured numerous key punk bands in the 1980s, was the site of their debut club date.
At a club show in 1983, Fishbone was discovered by Brian O’Neal of The BusBoys, who recommended them to Columbia Records. After debuting in 1985 with the single “Party at Ground Zero,” Fishbone released a David Kahne-produced EP of the same name. The band appeared in the 1987 Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon reunion film Back to the Beach. They played “Jamaica Ska” in support of their debut studio album, In Your Face.
Fishbone received a lot of positive press after its 1988 album Truth and Soul. Lyrically, the album features the band’s first foray into left-leaning social commentary, addressing such pressing issues as family dissolution, racism in the early ’90s, fascism, nuclear war, and oppression in low-income housing developments. The album’s standout track is “Freddie’s Dead,” a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s timeless song in the film Super Fly.
