El Gran Combo Information
El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, or simply El Gran Combo, is a salsa orchestra from Puerto Rico. They are based in San Juan. When it formed in 1962, it quickly became one of Puerto Rico's most popular bands. Many successful salsa musicians and singers began their careers with the band, most notably Andy Montaez. Other popular artists spent significant time there, and because of this, the group became known as La Universidad de la Salsa (The University of Salsa) in Colombia.
The group was given the name "La Universidad de la Salsa" in Colombia because of all the well-known salsa artists who either started their careers with the group, were members from the beginning (especially Andy Montañez), or were occasionally supported by the band or La India.
In May of 1962, Rafael Ithier established the salsa orchestra. Ithier is the sole surviving member of the band's original lineup and was formally serving as its musical director. Ithier conducted the ensemble and played infrequently in select live performances from 2010 until he died in 2022. Willie Sotelo, who joined the group in 2006 as a pianist, had been the band's de facto musical director during tours.
In a video named "Sesiones Desde La Loma Ep. 32," uploaded to Norberto Vélez's YouTube page on November 24, 2022, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico was showcased to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The hill's inaugural featured orchestra is El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
