Eels Information
Eels is an American rock band. The current lineup consists of Jonathan “Butch” Norton, Joe Mengis, Big/Krazy/Tiny/Honest/Upright/Royal Al (Allen Hunter), Knuckles (Derek Brown), P-Boo (Mike Sawitzke), Koool G Murder (Kelly Logsdon), The Chet (Jeff Lyster), and E (Mark Oliver Everett). The band was formed in 1991 in Los Angeles, California, by Mark Oliver Everett, who is best known by his stage name E.
Tommy Walter, Butch, and E met each other when the Eels was officially formed. The band name “Eels” was chosen because they wanted to record stuff closer to E’s solo records in alphabetical order. Although, it was an early decision as they realized soon that there are numerous Earth and Eagle, Wind, and Fire releases in between. The band also became one of the first groups that sign a record deal with DreamWorks Records, followed by Elliott Smith.
Eels released its debut album, Beautiful Freak, in 1996. It was a melancholy pop record with tormented lyrics. Their singles “Your Lucky Day in Hell” and “Novocaine for the Soul” received modest and international success. They also won the Best International Breakthrough Act award at the 1998 BRIT Awards. Eels toured extensively during 1996 and 1997 to support their album and build their reputation as a live act in Europe and the United States.
Eels’ notable albums include Electro-Shock Blues (1998), Daisies of the Galaxy (2000), Souljacker (2001), Shootenannyl (2003), Blinking Lights and Other Revelations (2005), Hombre Lobo (2009), End Times (2010), Tomorrow Morning (2010), Wonderful, Glorious (2013), The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett (2014), and many others.
