Doug Church Information
Doug Church (November 16, 1968) is an American producer and video game designer. He is from Evanston, Illinois, and attended MIT (the late 1980s). Later, he left it and went on to work with Looking Glass Studios. It was when the company was busy making primarily MS-DOS-based immersive sim games, such as System Shock, Thief, Ultima Underworld, and a few more. Warren Spector was a colleague of Church who stated that it was Church who originally coined the term "immersive simulation."
Later, Church joined Eidos Interactive as lending programming and design expertise as well as technical director. He worked on several games there, such as Crystal Dynamics and Ion Storm. In 2005, Church said goodbye to Eidos Interactive and joined Electronic Arts. He worked there from July 2005 to 2009 as a team leader on a project which was supervised by filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The church was also hired by Valve on March 16, 2011, and by OtherSide Entertainment in August 2016.
A few of the notable games that have been worked upon by Church include System Shock 2 (1999), Thief II: The Metal Age (2000), FreQuency (2001), Deus Ex (Game of the Year Edition) (2001), Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012), and a few more.
The church received the International Game Developers Association's Community Contribution award in 2003. It was given for his work as co-chair of the IGDA's educational committee, where he was responsible for developing relationships between the game industry and academia.
