Diego El Cigala Information
Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar (December 27, 1968) is a Romani Flamenco gypsy singer born in Madrid. He is also known as El Cigala, Castilian for "Langoustine." He is a citizen of the Dominican Republic as well.
Jiménez began his career as a singer in flamenco clubs after being born into a family of Romani artists and intellectuals in Madrid. He eventually grabbed the notice of flamenco dancers like Mario Maya and Joaquín Cortés and began traveling with their companies alongside guitarist Antón Jiménez.
Cigala is well-known for expanding the sonic boundaries of flamenco by drawing inspiration from a wide variety of styles. Due to his work with the great Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés, the 2003 CD "Lágrimas Negras" was released to widespread acclaim, fusing flamenco and Cuban music.
His first solo album, Undebel, was released in the late '90s after he had already assisted on records by Camarón de la Isla, Tomatito, Gerardo Nez, and Vicente Amigo. Since then, he's released seven more albums and been nominated for five Grammys and two Latin Grammys.
For the 2010 European Spanish dub of Toy Story 3, he provided the voice of Buzz Lightyear with an Andalusian accent.
