DeVotchKa Information
DeVotchKa is a multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that originated from Denver, Colorado, in 1977. The group deals in dark cabaret, indie folk, indie rock, and gypsy punk genres and was originally a backing band for burlesque shows. The ensemble’s current lineup consists of Nick Urata, Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder, and Shawn King.
DeVotchKa took its name from the Russian word devochka, which means “girl.” During the initial stage of its career, the group toured with the famous burlesque performer and model, Dita Von Teese. They earned an underground following and held several nationwide tours in support of self-released records. The band faced major fame after releasing it’s single named “How It Ends” after it was featured in a trailer for Everything Is Illuminated, in an episode of Everwood (Season 4), and a Gears of War 2 trailer entitled “The Last Day.”
DeVotchKa performed at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival, and its performance was considered a breakout event in the band’s entire career. Some of the other notable discographies by the ensemble are SuperMelodrama (2000), Triple X Tango (2002), Una Volta (2003), Curse Your Little Heart (EP) (2006), Little Miss Sunshine (soundtrack) (2006), I Love You, Phillip Morris motion picture soundtrack (2010), and DeVotchKa Live with the Colorado Symphony (2012).
DeVotchKa appeared in some other hit albums, such as Live at KEXP Vol.5 - “How It Ends” (2009), Starbuck’s Sweetheart - “Hot Burrito No. 1” (2009), and Songs from the Point! - Harry Nilsson cover album (2009).
