Devo Information
Devo, originally from Akron, Ohio, is an American new wave band. They started making music in 1973. The band's original lineup included Alan Myers, brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, and brothers Gerald and Bob Casales. When released in 1980, "Whip It" became a Top 14 success on the Billboard singles list and catapulted the band into the mainstream.
The band's name, Devo, was inspired by the idea of "de-evolution." The members believe that rather than progressing, humankind has begun to regress, as seen by the incoherence and herd mentality of modern American culture.
The "Whip It" and "Satisfaction" music videos by Devo inspired two new Funko Pops in January 2021. After finishing their devolution theory in 2020, the band was featured in the TV documentary Devolution: A Devo Theory a month later.
Devo has three consecutive Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations (2018, 2021, and 2022). Devo played the Cruel World Festival on May 14 and 15, 2022, at the Rose Bowl's Brookside golf course in Pasadena, California. Once again, on May 17, 2022, they played at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in San Francisco.
Mothersbaugh stated that 2023 would mark Devo's golden anniversary and that the band would continue to perform for another half-century. The band announced Jeff Friedl as their new drummer for their upcoming 2023 tour on July 6. The announcement was made in an Instagram post. Due to the group's retirement from live performance after this tour, a compilation album titled Art Devo 1973-1977 and a documentary were produced.
