Christopher John Davison (October 15, 1948) is a British-Irish singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist. He was born in Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe Province. He is professionally known by his stage name, Chris de Burgh. When he first started performing, he adopted his mother's maiden name, "de Burgh," as a stage name, while his official surname remained "Davison." The Davisons eventually settled in Bargy Castle in County Wexford, Ireland, which was run-down then. Eric de Burgh purchased the twelfth-century fortress in the 1960s. He turned it into a hotel, and little Chris entertained the guests.
In 1974, Chris de Burgh secured his first record deal with A&M Records and supported Supertramp on their Crime of the Century tour, gaining a small following. Far Beyond These Castle Walls, his debut album was a folk-tinged fantasy in the vein of the Moody Blues. Best Moves, a collection of songs from de Burgh's early albums, charted in the United Kingdom for the first time in 1981. It paved the way for Rupert Hine's The Getaway, which peaked at number 30 in the UK and 43 in the US, thanks to the creepy single "Don't Pay the Ferryman."
Chris de Burgh's follow-up album, Man on the Line, charted at 69 in the United States and 11 in the United Kingdom in 1984. In 2008, de Burgh published Footsteps, his sixteenth album, which featured cover versions of thirteen songs by musicians such as Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Toto, and Pete Seeger that have influenced him throughout his career; the album charted in the Top 5 in the United Kingdom.
