Charlotte Blake Alston Information
Charlotte Blake Alston is the American master storyteller, librettist, and narrator performing in big venues all across North America and abroad. Some of the venues include the Smithsonian Institution, the Kimmel Center, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Women of the World Festival in Cape Town, South Africa, a refugee camp in northern Senegal, and many detention centers.
Charlotte Blake Alston is famous for breathing life into contemporary and traditional stories from African and African American cultural and oral traditions. Her solo performances are further polished by the use of traditional instruments such as shekere, djembe, mbira, and 21-string kora. Charlotte started learning Kora and the West African history-telling traditions of Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and Guinea Bissau in 1999. Recently, she has resumed her learning with Malian Virtuoso Yacouba Sissoko.
Charlotte delivers her stories and songs to many regional and national festivals, universities, museums, libraries, schools, and performing arts centers throughout Canada and the USA. She became the first storyteller to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra on both their Family and Student concert series in 1991. Charlotte has been the host of “Sound All Around,” the orchestra’s preschool concert series, since 1994. She also hosted “Carnegie Kids,” Carnegie Hall’s Preschool concert series for six seasons.
Since 1996, Charlotte has been a featured artist on the Carnegie Hall Family Concert Series in NY, as well as at The National Storytelling Festival, regional festivals throughout North America and abroad, and The National Festival of Black Storytelling. As a narrator, she has been featured for many orchestras and conductors, including the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, The Cleveland Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and a few more.
