Carcass Information
Carcass, originally from Liverpool, England, was founded in the early '80s and plays extreme metal. Guitarist Bill Steer and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker are the only two original members still with the band. After splitting up in 1996, they reunited in 2007 sans original drummer Ken Owen owing to his illness. The band has released seven studio albums, two compilation albums, four extended plays, two demo albums, one video album, and six music videos.
Carcass was among the first bands to play grindcore and melodic death metal. Also, they're considered a pioneering force in developing modern grindcore and death metal scenes. Their early albums were labeled as "splatter death metal" and "hardgore" because of the artwork's dark subject matter and graphic nature.
Their fourth album, Heartwork (1993), is revered as a classic in the history of melodic death metal. Heartwork was distributed by Columbia Records in North America. At the same time, Earache handled international distribution for all of Carcass' albums up until and including Swansong (1996), making them one of the rare death metal artists to sign to a major label. The treatment of animals is a common theme in the band's lyrics. Both Walker and Steer choose vegetarian diets.
