Burton Cummings Information
Burton Cummings (December 31, 1947) is a Canadian musician born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received an honorary graduation from St. John's High School in 2010 after dropping out at 17 to focus on his music career. Cummings began performing with the Deverons, a local R&B group (not to be confused with the American group of the same name) in 1964, performing piano and vocals. In Winnipeg, the Deverons put out two singles.
Cummings began his solo career after departing from The Guess Who. His 1976 self-titled debut album was a commercial success, penetrating the Canadian albums chart. "Stand Tall" was a smashing success worldwide, with over a million copies sold in America alone. The Juno Award for Best Male Vocalist was bestowed upon him in 1977. Dream of a Child, his 1978 record, was one of Canada's best-selling albums, selling over 300,000 copies.
Many consider Cummings the most important rock musician from Canada; he is a member of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame & the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. In addition to being awarded an officer of the Order of Manitoba, he is also an officer of the Order of Canada. He is remembered in Winnipeg with the naming of the Burton Cummings Community Centre and the Burton Cummings Theatre.
