Brent Smith Information
Brent Stephen Smith (January 10, 1978) is an American singer born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Smith had a high school band called Blind Thought before joining Shinedown and later was the lead singer in a band called Dreve, which was signed to Atlantic Records. Brent was obliged to find another band or risk losing his record agreement with Atlantic Records. He then traveled to Los Angeles, California, to work with renowned producer Desmond Child on a project.

Shinedown formed shortly after. Atlantic Records quickly signed him to a development deal. Smith relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2001 to begin work on the project.
Through local Jacksonville music producer Pete Thornton, he recruited bassist Brad Stewart as the band's first member. Smith and Stewart began recording demos in a small local studio when the owner suggested meeting with her fiancé, guitarist Jasin Todd, whom Smith recruited as the band's third member. Drummer Barry Kerch, the band's sixth drummer who auditioned for the position, completed the initial lineup. The four collaborated on demos and presented their work-in-progress to Atlantic, who accepted it and gave it the go-ahead for a full-length album.
