Black Carl Information
Black Carl is an American funk rock band. The current lineup consists of Ian Woodward (bass), Matt Noakes (guitar), Chad Leonard (guitar), John Krause (drums), and Emma Pew (vocals). Drummer John Krause's roommate inspired the name "Black Carl." While making some recordings, I played the first tune for my roommate. With a laugh, he declared, "This is the Pink Floyd of hip hop. In other words, you should refer to it as "Black Carl." In their own words, their music "will make you feel like you're riding a mad horse toward a burning stable" because of its fusion of funk, soul, blues, and rock.
Their EP, named Black Carl, came out in January 2008. As of the week ending March 31, 2008, the EP was playing at the top spot on The Blaze, Arizona State University's student radio station. After Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins, the band members made guest DJ appearances. The EP includes their cover of "Bald Headed Woman," a song written by Shel Talmy, and a fixture in their live performance. They've been known to play Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" as a cover. With special guests Fairy Bones, Wyves, and Adam Bruce, the band reunited for a concert at Crescent Ballroom on October 9, 2021.
