Benjamin Lee Kenney Sr. (March 12, 1977) is an American musician from Brielle, New Jersey. He began his musical career by joining The Roots and later joined Incubus in 2003.
Kenney plays six different instruments and has some solo recordings where he sings all the vocals and records on every instrument independently. He sometimes plays drum duets with Jose Pasillas, who is the drummer in Incubus but usually records every project on his record label. 26, Maduro, Burn the Tapes, and Distance and Comfort, were all released through Kenney’s own record company called Ghetto Crush Industries. The company has also released music for Root Valdez, Aleda, and The Division Group.
Kenney has worked in a studio with Blackalicious, Erykah Badu, Faith Evans, and Justin Timberlake. He has been associated with the producers DJ Jazzy Jeff and Timbaland.
Kenney has released five solo albums so far. On solo records, he alone plays guitar, bass guitar, and drums while singing while writing independently. Kenney has also toured to support his solo records accompanied by Sekou Lumumba on drums and Ashley Mendel on vocals as well as bass guitar. He has released several notable albums, including 26 (2004), Maduro (2006), Distance and Comfort (2008), Burn the Tapes (2010), Leave on your Makeup – EP (2013), and Must Be Nice (2019).
