Bartees Leon Cox Jr. is an English-born American musician. He is professionally known by his stage name, Bartees Strange. Cox was born in Ipswich, England, and grew up in Mustang, Oklahoma, before moving to Washington, D.C.
Cox has been a musician since the mid-2000s. From 2016 to 2018, he was a member of the Brooklyn-based post-hardcore band Stay Inside. Under the name Bartees & The Strange Fruit, Cox released his debut solo album, the acoustic folk EP "Magic Boy," in late 2017.
Cox released Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, an EP of songs by The National that he reimagined, via Brassland in March 2020. In September 2020, Stereogum named Cox an Artist To Watch, and on October 2, 2020, he released his debut full-length album, Live Forever. Hip hop, indie rock, and jazz are all included on the CD. The CD gained accolades from critics all over the world.
Cox took part in the live show Thursday Signals V2 in 2020. Bartees Strange and several other bands and artists accompanied Lucy Dacus on her Fall 2021 Tour in 2021. At Boston and Washington, D.C., Bartees Strange served as the opening act.
