Aysanabee Information
Aysanabee is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer living in Toronto. Evan Pang, his birth name is Oji-Cree, and a member of the Sucker Clan from the Sandy Lake First Nation. At the age of three, Pang and his family left the reserve. They moved to various northern cities in Manitoba and Ontario until settling in Kaministiquia, just outside Thunder Bay, where he learned to play guitar and write songs.
His debut singles, Ocean Breath and Howling showcase various musical styles, from pensive folk and pop-rock to soul anthems with powerful drumming. Aysanabe was nominated for the IMA's music video competition in 2021 for his performance of "The Dawn," featured in the IMA's Emerging Artists Series. Aysanabee was one of sixteen musicians highlighted by Apple in a mini docuseries titled Giiwewizh for the 2021 International Indigenous Music Summit.
Aysanabee has played in several groups, but following the pandemic, he embarked on a solo career using his family name. He has spent six years working as a journalist for various media sources, which has helped him hone his narrative abilities but has also caused him to split his time and attention between two distinct spheres. He's currently working on a feature-length production that merges these two strands, telling the tale of his family, his struggle with identification, and his reconnecting with his roots, a story shared by people all throughout Canada.
