America Information
America is a British-American rock band established in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley, all American citizens. Their paths crossed when all three started performing live in London, where their parents were stationed in the US Air Force. The trio's breezy acoustic folk rock style and tight vocal harmonies helped them gain immense fame in the 1970s. Many of the band's albums and songs were popular on pop and soft rock radio stations.
The band members first got together in the late '60s, right after graduating high school. Peek became a member of the group in 1970, and they inked a recording contract with Warner Bros. Songs like "I Need You" and "A Horse with No Name" made it over the Atlantic on their self-titled first album the year after.
Gonzo Multimedia's "America Live at The Palladium" deluxe box set, which chronicles the band's 2018 London Palladium performance and features all of their best hits, was published in May 2019. As a result, the 50th Anniversary Tour of the United States was rescheduled for the summer of 2021. In 2020, journalist Jude Warne published America, the Band: An Authorized Biography.
Gerry Beckley announced his retirement from touring in early 2024 so he could spend more time with his family. To cover for Gerry on tour, the band re-engaged Andy Barr, who had played a short fill-in role in 2015.
