When he was a teenager, Ali Awan played bass in the punk band Ballistik at house performances in West Philadelphia. Later, he played lead guitar for touring bands like Needle Points and Jane Church. However, the 26-year-old emerging star on the Philadelphia independent music scene, born in Abington and has since lived in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, has only been releasing music under his name for a year.
Awan has traveled far in a short period. He was chosen as an artist to watch by adult alternative radio station WXPN-FM in January after releasing a streak of excellent songs in 2018, beginning with "Citadel Blues" and performing for a crowded crowd at World Cafe Live for a free lunchtime event. Awan has since self-released Butterfly, a collection of seven songs that displays his skill as a songwriter and ranges from brutal garage rock to more delicate soul-searching songs with a folk influence.
