Adam Ant (November 3, 1954), whose real name is Stuart Leslie Goddard, is an English actor, singer, and musician. He was born in Marylebone, London. From 1980 to 1983, he achieved eleven top-ten successes in the UK, including three No. 1 songs, while performing as a solo artist. He became famous as the main vocalist of a new wave band, Adam & the Ants. He has also made several appearances in cinema and television.
Ant started in the music industry as a bass player for the band Bazooka Joe. He was a member of Adam & the Ants from 1977 to 1982. Their 1979 self-titled first album, Dirk Wears White Sox, peaked at No. 1 on the Independent Albums Chart in the United Kingdom.
As the 1980s and 1990s rolled around, Ant shifted his concentration to acting, landing parts in films and TV shows and on stage. With André Cymone at the helm, he released Manners & Physique (1990), his fourth solo album with a Minneapolis feel. Ant was let go by MCA Records despite his song "Room at the Top" reaching number 20 in the US.
Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter (2013, UK number 25) is the latest album that Ant has recorded and released since 2010. He has also completed eight full-length UK national tours, five US national tours, and two Australian tours since 2010. Still unreleased as of this writing is 2014's Bravest of the Brave, the band's second studio album.
As of May 20, 2023, Ant was set to appear in Pasadena, California, at the Cruel World Festival. Then, "unforeseen circumstances" forced Ant to cancel his performance just before the festival was set to begin.
