The Drowsy Chaperone Information
Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison composed the score and lyrics for the musical The Drowsy Chaperone, which also features a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. Martin joined the writing team when the play was reworked for the Toronto Fringe Festival, and he came up with the character of Man in Chair to act as the show's narrator and commentator. After the success of the Fringe show, commercial theater producer David Mirvish in Toronto funded a larger production for the independent Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, which seats 160 people. Mirvish financed more development and full-scale production of the show in 2001 at Toronto's 1000-seat Winter Garden Theatre following the show's commercial and critical success.
The protagonist is a middle-aged, reclusive musical theater fan who, when "blue," decides to perform for the audience by playing an LP of his favorite musical, the made-up 1928 performance The Drowsy Chaperone. The man makes witty observations about the music, script, and actors while the record plays, bringing to life the show as a satire of 1920s American musical comedy.
On May 1, 2006, after a run in Los Angeles beginning in 2005, The Drowsy Chaperone made its Broadway debut. The show had its world premiere in 1998 at Toronto's The Rivoli. Among the many prizes it was nominated for were five Tonys and seven Drama Desks, the highest honors in the Broadway and West End theater communities. There have been two North American tours, a production in Batemans Bay in southeast Australia and major productions in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, London, Melbourne, and Japan.
