Kinky Boots Information
Harvey Fierstein wrote the musical Kinky Boots, which has music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. The musical follows Charlie Price's life and is based on the British film Kinky Boots, written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth and largely based on actual events.
The show's creative team was put together by 2010, following its conceptualization in 2006. Featuring Stark Sands and Billy Porter as Charlie and Lola, respectively, the original Kinky Boots opened at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago in October 2012. Jerry Mitchell was responsible for both the directing and choreography of the performance. After previews started on March 3, 2013, it premiered on April 4, 2013, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway.
Kinky Boots outperformed its competitor in weekly box office gross and later had an increase in advance sales after Tony. This occurred less than one month after the film's premiere. A season-high thirteen nominations and six Tony Awards were bestowed to the production.
In its first week of release, the cast album for the musical peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Cast Albums list and No. 51 on the Billboard 200 list. Launching in 2015 on the West End, it won three Laurence Olivier Awards in 2016, with Best New Musical being one of them. There was a 2014 launch of the musical's US tour. On April 7, 2019, the Broadway show came to a close.
