Tango is a musical stage production that revolves around the history and several varieties of Argentine tango. The musical was directed and created by Hector Orezzoli along with Claudio Segovia. Tango Argentino premiered at the Festival d'Automne in Paris in 1983, and in 1985, it premiered on Broadway in New York. The production enjoyed world-wide success with numerous tours. The musical is well-known for re-creating the history of tango from its beginning in 19th-century Buenos Aires to the golden age of tango in the 1940s and 50s up to Piazzolla's tangos; all on stage.
Tango was an unexpected hit that violated all the rules and showcased slim, professional athletic dancers. The average cast age for the production was 42 years. Sexteto Mayor provided the music for Tango Argentino. The sextet for the production was first established by Julio De Caro, while the traditional tango sextet consists of double bass, two violins, piano, and two bandoneóns.
Tango Argentino has toured the United States and Japan. The cast has even performed for the likes of Princess Diana, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Liza Minnelli, Jacqueline Kennedy, Ann Miller, Rita Moreno, Katharine Hepburn, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolph Nureyev, Burt Reynolds, and more.
