Rattlesnake Kate Information
In 2008, while Neyla Pekarek was a student at the University of Northern Colorado, she visited the Greeley Municipal Museum, where she learned about the life of Rattlesnake Kate. She couldn't believe she had grown up in Colorado without ever learning about the famed frontierswoman. Pekarek joined the Lumineers in 2010 after seeing an ad for the band on Craigslist, but she has never stopped wanting to share Kate Slaughterback's story.
Right after she left the Lumineers in 2019, she released a solo album of songs inspired by Slaughterback's life, marking the beginning of her new career as a solo artist. The musical Rattlesnake Kate, written by Pekarek and Karen Hartman, will have its world premiere on February 4 at the Wolf Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, telling Slaughterback's story.
The legend of Rattlesnake Kate has recently seen a resurgence thanks to the musical RATTLESNAKE KATE and a chapter in Cindy Brick's upcoming 2021 book Colorado Curiosities: Rattlesnake Kate, The Crying Bridge, Kit Carson's Last Trip & More, in which Brick recounts the events of October 28, 1925, which gave rise to the town of Slaughterback's legendary reputation.
