Pippin Information
The script and lyrics for the musical Pippin were written by Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz in 1972. Besides directing the original Broadway show, Bob Fosse wrote some librettos. Based on the legend of the mystery performance group commanded by the mysterious Leading Player, Pippin tells the narrative of a young prince named Pippin who is on a quest to find his place in the world. The "fourth wall" is shattered several times in most classic productions.
Although Pippin and Charlemagne, the story's protagonist and father, are based on real people from the early Middle Ages, the story is completely fictional and offers no historical truth. Motown Records helped fund a portion of the concert. As of April 2019, Pippin is the 36th longest-running Broadway production of the original run.
Ben Vereen and Patina Miller made history when they became the first actors to win Tony Awards for Best Leading Actress and Best Leading Actor in a Musical, for the same role, for their performances as the Leading Player in the original Broadway production and the 2013 revival.
