Once Upon A Mattress Information
Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer wrote the script for the musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress, which has music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer. Before its 1959 Broadway transfer, it premiered off-Broadway in May. "The Princess and the Pea" is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen from 1835, and the play is a comedic take on the story. At the Tamiment adult summer camp resort, the first version of Once Upon a Mattress was penned as a shorter play.
On CBS, the original airing took place on June 3, 1964. The black-and-white live-action filming brought together the original Broadway cast—Burnett, Bova, Gilford, and White—along with new principals Bill Hayes (Minstrel), Shani Wallis (Lady Larken), and Elliott Gould (in his first screen appearance).
The musical, produced by the Transport Group, premiered Off-Broadway at the Abrons Arts Center on December 13, 2015, and had a limited run until January 3, 2016. John Epperson played Queen Aggravain, Jessica Fontana played Lady Larken, David Greenspan played The King, and Hunter Ryan Herdlicka played The Minstrel in this production of The Merry Widow, directed by Jack Cummings III.
