Medora Musical Information
The Medora Musical is a summertime musical revue performed in the outdoor Burning Hills Amphitheater near Medora, North Dakota. A nod to Theodore Roosevelt, who spent time in western North Dakota, especially in the adjacent Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the musical nostalgically revisits the region's "Wild West" days.
'Old Four-Eyes' ended in 1964 after only one season since viewership had dropped. 'Teddy Roosevelt Rides Again' appeared in 1963 and 1964 instead of the program. A new era began for the amphitheater in 1965 when it was bought out by industrialist Harold Schafer. In order to accommodate the inauguration of the Medora Musical the same year, the amphitheater was renovated and enlarged during Schafer's ownership.
The amphitheater is perched on a hillside, with wooden seats and rustic structures around the stage. Due to the hillside's natural acoustics, no sound equipment would be necessary. Locals, actors, and Home on the Range Ranch lads worked together to chisel the amphitheater into the Burning Gulch badlands. Wooden seats were placed on the slope, and a set of rustic huts was built around the stage.
