Into the Woods is a musical based on the book by James Lapine, and with lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim. Into the Woods intertwines the plots of several of Charles Perrault's fairy tales and Brothers Grimm. It explores the consequences of the characters' quests and wishes. The main characters of the musical are taken from "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Rapunzel," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," along with many other well-known characters.
Into the Woods is a story that involves a childless baker, his wife, and their combined quest to have a baby and start a family. The storyline includes the couple's interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on the couple and their communication with various storybook characters during the journey.
Into the Woods debuted in San Diego in 1986 at the Old Globe Theatre, and on November 5, 1987, it premiered on Broadway, where the musical won several Tony Awards. It has been produced many times, including a 1990 West End production, a 1988 US national tour, a 1997 tenth anniversary concert, a 2010 London revival, a 2002 Broadway revival, and in 2012 in the Park series as part of New York City's outdoor Shakespeare.
In 2014, a Disney film adaptation of Into the Woods was released, which was directed by Rob Marshall, starring James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Tracey Ullman, and Christine Baranski.
Some of the notable musical numbers included in the musical are "Cinderella at the Grave," "Rapunzel's Song," and "Moments in the Woods." Apart from Tony awards, Into the Woods has won many Drama Desk Awards, Laurence Olivier Awards, and several nominations.
