Hairspray Information
Based on John Waters's 1988 film, the American musical Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. It is based on a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Dance music from the 1960s and "downtown" rhythm and blues are among the tunes featured. The story follows Tracy Turnblad, a high school student in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, as she pursues her goal of performing on The Corny Collins Show, a local television dance program modeled after the original Buddy Deane Show.
Twenty years after the original production opened, in August 2022, a show revival opened at Melbourne's Regent Theatre—the first-ever Australian performance of the Broadway hit. Matt Lenz, who directed, Dominic Shaw, who did the choreography, replicated the work of Jack O'Brien, who directed, and Jerry Mitchell, who did the choreography. Tracy (Carmel Rodrigues), Edna (Shane Jacobson), Velma (Rhonda Burchmore), Wilbur (Todd McKenney), Corny Collins (Rob Mills), and Motormouth Maybelle (Asabi Goodman) were among the cast members.
In December 2022, Irish-born Australian Bobby Fox took over as Corny Collins when the play relocated to Adelaide's Festival Centre. On January 29, 2023, production came to a stop in Adelaide. The show subsequently transferred to the Lyric Theatre in Sydney, where it ran from February 9 to April 2 of the same year.
