Fiddler On The Roof Information
The musical Fiddler on the Roof was written by Joseph Stein, with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It first occurred in Imperial Russia's Pale of Settlement around 1905. Sholem Aleichem's stories inspire the show, including Tevye, his Daughters, and Tevye the Dairyman.
As he and his family face increasing pressure from the outside world, the protagonist, Tevye, a milkman from the town of Anatevka, fights to hold on to his Jewish faith and culture.
When it premiered in 1964 on Broadway, the play had the longest-running of any musical theater production at more than 3,000 performances. Fiddler on the Roof was the longest-running Broadway musical for over a decade until Grease broke it.
Aside from receiving rave reviews, the show was a huge financial success. As the best musical, score, book, directing, and choreography, it took home nine Tonys. It had a long history of success on Broadway, inspired five subsequent revivals, and had a smashing 1971 film version. School and community theaters have also found success with it.
The show received three Tony Award nominations but came up empty-handed. The final performance was on December 31, 2016, following 463 appearances. The pandemic halted the U.S. and Canadian tour of the Sher-directed show in March 2020; the term restarted in 2021 and ran until 2023. It began in 2018.
