Crazy for You Information

The musical Crazy for You is a love comedy musical show. Ken Ludwig wrote the book, Ira Gershwin wrote the lyrics, and George Gershwin wrote the music. Although it borrows heavily from the songwriting duo's prior works, "The New Gershwin Musical Comedy" draws heavily on their 1930 musical Girl Crazy. It was named Best Musical at the 1992 Tonys (Broadway), the 1993 Oliviers (London), and the 1994 Doras (Toronto).

It was long in the works for Roger Horchow and Elizabeth Williams to reimagine Girl Crazy. With the Gershwin family's blessing, they hired Ken Ludwig for the book, Mike Ockrent for the direction, and Susan Stroman for the choreography. The associate producers were Richard Godwin and Valerie Gordon.

The Gershwins' first Broadway performance was of "The Real American Folk Song (Is a Rag)"; in contrast, "Naughty Baby" was making its premiere, having previously appeared in Primrose, which was limited to London and Australia.

Additional musical numbers were taken from the musicals A Damsel in Distress and Shall We Dance, both of which were published in the same year that George passed away ("Slap That Bass" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me").

Charlie Stemp portrays Bobby Child, and Carly Anderson plays Polly Baker in a new performance for a limited summer run at the 2022 Chichester Festival. Susan Stroman does the choreography and directing.
