Come From Away Information
Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the musical Come from Away. It's based on what happened at Gander International Airport in Newfoundland the week after September 11 when 38 planes carrying around 7,000 people were ordered to land unexpectedly. The residents of Gander and the stranded tourists they took in and nourished are the inspiration for (and namesakes for) the characters in the show.
The musical has been well-received by both audiences and critics for its uplifting message about the power of love to overcome evil in the face of adversity. In October 2018, it surpassed The Drowsy Chaperone's record of 674 performances to become Broadway's longest-running Canadian musical. It has since joined the ranks of Broadway plays that have received 1,000 or more performances. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the assaults, September 10, 2021, a live recording of the production was released.
After 25 previews and 1,670 regular performances on Broadway, it was announced on June 8, 2022, that the show would end on October 2. In December 2018, the musical debuted at Dublin, Ireland's The Abbey Theatre, and in February 2019, it moved to London's West End, specifically the Phoenix Theatre. The London manufacturing's January 7, 2023 shutdown was announced on July 1, 2022.
