Carmen Jones Information
Carmen Jones is a 1943 American Broadway musical. Georges Bizet produced its music, lyrics, and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II premiered at The Broadway Theatre. Bizet's Carmen is reimagined in an African-American setting during World War II. The opera was based on Prosper Mérimée's 1846 novella. Billy Rose produced the Broadway musical directed by Hassard Short and starred in an all-black ensemble. Robert Shaw created the show's choir sections.
Muriel Smith played the title role in the Broadway show. The initial Broadway cast members were almost all fresh to the stage; according to Kennedy and Muir, just one person had ever performed on a stage before. Hammerstein and Harry Kleiner adapted the 1954 film. It starred Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte and was directed by Otto Preminger.
The musical was revived in London, with a season at the Old Vic in 1991 and the Royal Festival Hall in 2007. It was resurrected off-Broadway in 2018 at the Classic Stage Company, directed by John Doyle and starring Anika Noni Rose in the title role.
