Camelot Information
Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe wrote Camelot in 1960. It is based on King Arthur's mythology, modified by T. H. White's 1958 novel The Once and Future King. The original Broadway production, directed by Moss Hart and orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett and Philip J. Lang, received four Tony Awards and ran for 873 performances. Richard Burton played Arthur, Julie Andrews played Guenevere, and Robert Goulet played Lancelot.
It produced several revivals, international productions, and the 1967 Warner Bros. film Camelot. Because of an interview with Jackie Kennedy. She linked her husband's administration to King Arthur's rule; the musical has become connected with the Kennedy Administration, frequently referred to as the "Camelot Era."
The original Broadway production cast featured Richard Burton (as King Arthur), Julie Andrews (Queen Guenevere), Robert Goulet (Sir Lancelot), David Hurst (Merlin), Robert Coote (Pellinore), Roddy McDowall (Mordred), John Cullum (Sir Dinadan), M'el Dowd* (Morgan le Fay), Robin Stewart (Tom of Warwick), Virginia Allen (Lady Catherine), Marjorie Smith (Nimue), Bruce Yarnell (Sir Lionel), Michael Kermoyan (Sir Ozanna), and James E. Gannon (Sir Sagramore).
In future productions, Alan Jay Lerner replaced the scene between her and Mordred with a scene between Mordred and Arthur to make the second act less funny.
