North Carolina Tar Heels Womens Basketball Information
The North Carolina Tar Heels are the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's NCAA Division I women's basketball team. They play in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Head coach Courtney Banghart is in her fourth year with the team.
As a Department of Physical Education component, the women's basketball team formally began operations in 1971. With Angela Lumpkin at the helm as coach in 1974, the athletic department took over women's basketball and several other sports. Conference play began in 1978, and clubs made their NCAA tournament debut in 1983.
Due to renovations at the historic Carmichael Auditorium, the women's team played its 2008–09 season home games in the Dean Smith Center, situated south of campus.
With no imperfections, home and conference season ended with an 82-51 thrashing of local rival Duke in front of a sell-out 8,010 spectators in the last game at the old Carmichael. Before being reopened to the public, the structure was known as Carmichael Arena.
