South Carolina Gamecocks Womens Basketball Information
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is home to the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team, which plays for the University of South Carolina. The Gamecocks have been a national powerhouse under current head coach Dawn Staley, earning the title of NCAA champion in 2017 and 2022.
The 1980s were a banner year for the program as head coach Nancy Wilson guided the Metro Conference to five regular season titles and three tournament triumphs.
South Carolina is the only team in SEC history to win the tournament four years in a row; the Gamecocks beat the 2018 event after defeating Mississippi State. Their season was over after losing to Connecticut in the Sweet 16 final.
Under the direction of senior point guard Tyasha Harris and the nation's top-ranked recruiting class, South Carolina rolled to a 32-1 (16-0) season in 2020. In addition to winning the SEC regular season and tournament crowns, the Gamecocks defeated 14 ranked opponents, including UConn, which was their first-ever win. They made it to the Final Four in 2021, but Stanford beat them by one point.
The Gamecocks defeated UConn 64–49 on April 3, 2022, to capture their second national championship. They went 35-2 overall and were undefeated in the regular season and all major polls. Dawn Staley was awarded the nation's top coach for 2022, while Aliyah Boston was chosen Player of the Year.
