In Minneapolis, Minnesota, the University of Minnesota is represented by the women's basketball team, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Golden Gophers have been a constant conference member since the Big Ten's basketball sponsorship started in 1982. Williams Arena is the venue for all their home games, and Dawn Plitzuweit is the team's current head coach.
The AIAW women's basketball tournament (the forerunner to the contemporary NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship) ran from 1958 to 1982, and the Golden Gophers participated in it three times. They went 1-3 overall.
The University of Minnesota has produced five NBA players and eight All-Americans in its basketball history, known as the Golden Gophers. Lindsay Whalen, Amanda Zahui B., Janel McCarville, and Rachel Banham were selected with the first four choices in the WNBA draft, respectively. Since the 2001-2002 season, the attendance ranks of the Gophers' games have consistently been within the top 20 in the nation for seven consecutive seasons.
The Golden Gophers reached the Final Four of the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship in 2004, the ninth time they have done so. The Golden Gophers have made three trips to the AIAW tournament to date.
