The 1982–1983 basketball season was the first in which the Big Ten started to sponsor women's basketball. Ohio State won the conference tournament at Michigan State in February 1982, with a final score of 69-66 over Illinois. This event was part of the 1981–82 season. Some media outlets have reported this as the conference regular season championship.
With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers, the Big Ten Conference had fourteen clubs for the 2014–15 season. Maryland won their first Big Ten Conference tournament title in their first season (2015), marking the first year for each school.
