The competition is four rounds long and uses a single-elimination format; up to 2011, the top four seeds received first-round byes. The winners go on to face the teams ranked first in the quarterfinals. Seasonal records are used for seeding. With the exception of 2020, when it was postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Tournament has been hosted annually since 1997.

The most successful school is Baylor University, which has more than double the number of titles won than the second-place school. Additionally, Baylor won their first title in 2005. Until 2031, the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, will host the Tournament.
