Zapp Information
Zapp is an American funk band. The current lineup comprises Lester Troutman, Terry "Zapp" Troutman, Gregory Jackson, and Bobby Glover. The 1980 self-titled debut album by Zapp was published, and the song "More Bounce to the Ounce" brought the band widespread fame. Zapp II, the band's 1982 follow-up, was certified gold and sold successfully. The G-funk sound and the larger West Coast hip-hop culture were both impacted by Zapp in the 1990s.
The subsequent albums by Zapp maintained the sleek electronic sound that Zapp II had embraced, but they could have been more successful. Although it reached 39 on the Billboard 200 and 9 on the R&B chart upon its 1983 release, Zapp III was only certified gold. As the post-disco era faded in the mid-1980s, Zapp III's worse commercial success indicated that the band's fame and influence were starting to wane.
In the early to mid-1990s, when the West Coast hip-hop scene was at its peak, Zapp and Roger were momentarily in the limelight again when their music was sampled for hip-hop. Troutman became famous for his talk-box backing vocals on Tupac Shakur's 1995–1996 comeback hit "California Love" and its remixes. In one of the music videos, Troutman plays the talk-box and keyboard during a party.
