Yundi Li Information
Yundi Li is a Chinese concert pianist, born in Chongqing, Sichuan, popularly known as Yundi. Yundi is also well-known for being the youngest pianist to win the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition at 18 in 2000. He mastered the accordion at the age of four while learning it from the well-known music professor in China named Tan Jianmin. Yundi won first place at the Chongqing Children’s Accordion Competition after a year of learning.
At the age of seven, Yundi began learning the piano and was introduced to Dan Zhaoyi by his teacher. Zhaoyi is one of the most renowned piano teachers in China. Yundi studied piano with him for almost nine years. He joined the Shenzhen Arts School in 1994 and later on went to the Hochschule fur Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, in Hanover, Germany.
Yundi made his debut in the United States in June 2003 at Carnegie Hall. He was a part of the Steinway and Sons’ 150th Anniversary Gala. The next month, he made his concert debut in the United States and performed at Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Yundi was also honored at a special reception at the residence of the United States’ Chinese Ambassador. He has recorded several notable albums so far, such as Yundi Li: Chopin (2002), Yundi Li: Liszt (2003), Yundi Li: Chopin Scherzi&Impromptus (2004), and Yundi Li: Vienna Recital (2005).
