Itzhak Perlman Information

Itzhak Perlman (August 31, 1945) is an Israeli-American violinist. He played during the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009 and at a state banquet for Queen Elizabeth II at the White House in 2007.

Perlman has led the orchestras of Detroit, Philadelphia, and Westchester, among others. He received the Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States in 2015. Including his Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Perlman has amassed 16 Grammys and 4 Emmys throughout his career.

After making three appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show between 1958 and 1964, Perlman became a household name nationwide. His repertoire for the presentation includes "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Rimsky-Korsakov, "Polonaise Brillante" by Wieniawski, and "The First Violin Concerto" by Mendelssohn.

The Zionist Organization of America began supporting Perlman's early career, and he soon embarked on a solo tour of North American cities.

Although he is most renowned for his work in the classical genre, Perlman has also recorded albums of jazz (including a collaboration with jazz pianist Oscar Peterson), klezmer, and bluegrass. He has performed as a featured soloist on several Oscar-winning film soundtracks, including John Williams' Schindler's List theme from 1993. He and cellist Yo-Yo Ma recently appeared as the film's violin and cello soloists in Memoirs of a Geisha (2005).

Perlman was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on November 2, 2018. The show was commemorating the 60th anniversary of the very first appearance by Perlman on The Ed Sullivan Show.
