In 1967, Clark Gesner and (in a 1999 rewrite) Andrew Lippa wrote the music and lyrics for the musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Creator Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts comic strip inspired the show's characters. Due to its manageable cast sizes and straightforward staging, the musical has proven to be a favorite among amateur theater groups. Although the show's book was credited to John Gordon, the published screenplay includes Gesner's foreword in which he states that "John Gordon" is a collective pseudonym encompassing Gesner and the cast members and production personnel who collaborated on the writing.
Gary Burghoff played Charlie Brown, Reva Rose played Lucy, Bob Balaban played Linus, Karen Johnson played Patty (not to be confused with Peppermint Patty), and Bill Hinnant played Snoopy in the musical's off-Broadway premiere at Theatre 80 in the East Village on March 7, 1967. "Assistant to the Director" Patricia Birch was listed as the choreographer, while Joseph Hardy was the director.
The Off-Broadway York Theatre Company brought the show back to life. Some young performers from Broadway shows were part of the revival. Along with Jeremy T. Villas as Linus, the six-member "Peanuts" gang included Gregory Diaz as Schroeder, Aidan Gemme as Snoopy, Milly Shapiro as Sally, Mavis Simpson-Ernst as Lucy, and Joshua Colley as Charlie Brown. Graydon From June 1st to the 7th, Peter Yosowitz was Charlie Brown. May 24th through June 26th, 2016 was the run of the show.
