Water for Elephants is a musical based on a novel by Rick Elice, with music and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Co. Sara Gruen's 2006 novel of the same name inspired it. The production, based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, was announced in March 2023 with the following dates: June 16, 2023, with previews starting on June 7 and running through July 9, 2023, at the Alliance Theatre.
Jessica Stone helmed the Atlanta production, which included dancers Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll. Takeshi Kata designed the sets, David Israel Reynoso created the costumes, Bradley King oversaw the lighting, and Jessica Paz handled the sound. In September 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a filing reportedly financing the Broadway show for up to $25 million. With that kind of money, it would be the most costly Broadway show of the 2023–2024 season.
The musical debuted at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway, playing in previews from February 24 to March 21, 2024. The film's production values and visual extravaganza earned it mixed reviews from critics. At the 77th Tony Awards, it was nominated for seven honors, one of which was Best Musical.
