Willie Jones III Information
Willie Jones III (June 8, 1968) is an American jazz drummer. He was born in Los Angeles. Jones stated that he had aspired to be a jazz musician since he was seven years old. Jones was a founding member of the Black Note band in 1990. James Mahone, Kenneth Crouch, Mark Shelby, Ark Sano, Eric Reed, Gilbert Castellanos, and Richard E. Grant were all members of this group at one point or another. They put out a few albums.
Jones enrolled in the California Institute of the Arts in 1991, where he studied drumming with Albert "Tootie" Heath. Jones performed with trumpeter Arturo Sandoval from 1994 to 1998, after playing with Milt Jackson in 1994. Jones created WJ3 Records, an indie jazz label, in 2000. He has recorded many CDs as a leader on his label, performing hard bop and swing with pianist Eric Reed and as the drummer for Wynton Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center.
On tours and recordings, Jones has collaborated with Horace Silver, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, and Herbie Hancock. He contributed to the Grammy-winning album Hot House by Arturo Sandoval (1998).
