Will Liverman Information
Will Liverman is an operatic baritone from the United States dubbed "a new, thrilling voice in the opera world" by NPR. At the Metropolitan Opera, he has played a variety of parts. Liverman earned a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Music degree from Wheaton College in Illinois, where he studied with Cynthia Hoffmann.
To date, Liverman's significant operatic roles included the lead in the Metropolitan Opera's staging of Fire Shut Up in My Bones in 2021. The staging, which debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in the 2021–2022 season, had an all-black cast and became the first opera by a black composer to be presented there.
The Factotum is a non-traditional opera created by Liverman, collaborating with DJ and recording artist K-Rico. It is set in a barbershop in modern-day Chicago and is based on Rossini's The Barber of Seville. The Factotum combines gospel, R&B, and hip hop music, among other genres, and operatic singing. According to Liverman, the sculpture is a "celebration of being black," according to Liverman.
Dreams of a New Day: Songs by Black Composers, a collaboration between Liverman and pianist Paul Sanchez, reached number one on Billboard's Traditional Classical Albums chart in 2021. It has also received a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album.
