Vanessa Lynn Williams (March 18, 1963) is an American actress, singer, and fashion designer. She is from The Bronx, New York. She was born with a birth announcement that read: "Here she is: Miss America.” Williams and her younger brother Chris grew up in Westchester County. She attended the Chappaqua Central School District. Williams grew up learning classical and jazz dance, violin, French horn, and piano. She was also honored to receive the “Presidential Scholarship for Drama” to attend Carnegie Mellon University. Williams rejected the offer and attended Syracuse University on another scholarship. She entered the Department of Drama as a musical theater major.
Vanessa Lynn Williams was initially recognized as the first woman of African-American descent who received the title of Miss America, crowned as Miss America 1984 in the year 1983. Her debut studio album was released in 1988, entitled The Right Stuff. The title single on this album, "Dreamin'," peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
Some of the other studio albums by Williams include The Comfort Zone (1991), The Sweetest Days (1994), Star Bright (1996), Next (1997), Everlasting Love (2005), The Real Thing (2009), and much more. She also starred in a variety of hit films such as The Pick-up Artist 1987, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland 1999, Johnson Family Vacation 2004, Hannah Montana: The Movie 2009, Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor 2013, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay 2018, and the list goes on.
Williams received major success as an artist. She earned an NAACP Image Award for the category of Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. She got three times nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
