Tower of Power Information
Tower of Power is a horn section and band from Oakland, California, playing R&B and funk music together since 1968. Lenny Williams, who led the band from early 1973 to late 1974, when they were at the height of their financial success, is often regarded as the band's best-known lead vocalist.
Emilio Castillo, a tenor saxophone and singer, met Stephen "Doc" Kupka, a baritone saxophonist, in the summer of 1968. Castillo's father instructed Castillo Jr. to "hire that guy" after hearing him perform at home despite Castillo's participation in other bands.
After rebranding themselves as The Motowns, the band quickly began performing gigs throughout Oakland and Berkeley, where their soulful sound won over members of the city's diverse music scene.
On their breakthrough album, Bump City (1972), Rick Stevens took over for Rufus Miller as lead singer. The track "You're Still a Young Man" from this album was Stevens' career high point as a singer with the band; it peaked at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The band's third album, Tower of Power, was released in the spring of 1973. "So Very Hard to Go" became their most popular song after being featured on this album. The record only reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, although it was number one on numerous West Coast Top 40 stations' polls. "This Time It's Real" and "What Is Hip?" appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 as singles from the album.
