Thornetta Davis Information
Davis joined the band Jas at the age of 15, and after they broke up in 1983, she and two other former Jas members, together with two of her high school classmates, founded Chanteuse, a vocal group that sang covers of old R&B songs. Lamonte Zodiac & the Love Signs, a local soul group that evolved into the Chisel Brothers, enlisted her as a backup singer. By 1991, Davis provided background vocals for Big Chief on his Sub Pop albums.
When the band broke up, Davis was offered a solo recording contract by the same company, and she released her debut EP, Sunday Morning Music (1995), the following year. "Davis' singing is just wonderful; she's got a rich, warm voice," said one critic. The Sopranos' "Isabella" episode featured a cover of the album's "Cry" track.
Davis has previously shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt and Katie Webster at the 1992 Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival. Davis backed Kid Rock's vocals on his single "Wasting Time" and his albums "Devil Without a Cause" (1998) and "Kid Rock" (2003) between 1997 and 2003. Davis sang background vocals for Kid Rock at Madison Square Garden's 2000 VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards.
